Should I Go To Culinary School?

Perhaps your mother or father was a pretty good cook and let you help them when you were a kid. You got to like working in the kitchen and learned to become a pretty good cook yourself. You watched with incredulity as the iron chefs made four or five gourmet dishes in one hour on TV. Now you are thinking about a career and you understand that cooking gives you as much pleasure as anything else you’ve tried, and you’re considering becoming a professional chef. So you naturally ask yourself the question: should I go to culinary school?

When you find out that a year in culinary school costs almost as much as attending a private college, you are faced with the dilemma of deciding if that level of financial commitment is worth it. You’ll probably have to borrow money to pay for it, and you’re worried about paying off this debt in the future. So the question is not an easy one to answer.

The only thing to do is to comprehend the benefits of attending culinary school and then make a determination if it is worth it. Let’s take a look at some of those benefits.

In a top culinary school you will be taught by successful chefs who have proven themselves in the industry. You will no doubt greatly improve your culinary skills, working with all kinds of vegetables, meats, sea foods, spices and other flavorings to make classic dishes as well as ethnic foods, a growing sector of the food business. You’ll also get comprehensive training in making pastries and desserts. You’ll learn all about wine, how and where it is made, how to taste and evaluate wine, and most importantly how to make pairings of wine and food for maximum effect. You will learn these skills while getting practical experience in the kitchens of the in-house restaurant run and operated by the culinary school and through other externship opportunities where culinary school students work in established restaurants that the school has set up working relationships with.

On top of all this you will learn about the financial and management sides of running a restaurant business. Of course all these skills can be learned outside of culinary school, but it would take most people half a lifetime to be exposed to all these different aspects of the food business.

And don't neglect to look into online professional training. In fact you can check it out for FREE for a full two weeks at Rouxbe Online Cooking Schools.
